The republic sits in a subtropical belt, giving it a continental mountain climate. Winters in Armenia are cold but short, while summers are hot and dry. Rain usually falls in spring and early summer. Worth noting is the country's strong altitudinal zonation, which produces dramatic swings in temperature depending on elevation.

- Yerevan - the capital of Armenia; a very ancient, beautiful city sometimes called "the Pink City", since most of its buildings are built from pink tuff stone. The city is also worth visiting for the ruins of an ancient Roman fortress, a 16th-century Turkish fort and its many churches;
- Gyumri - a city known for its military history. It's home to the "Black Fortress", built in 1837, which once defended the city, the picturesque Aparan Reservoir with its striking scenery, and whole quarters preserved as they were since the 19th century;
- Vanadzor - a city set in a basin between two mountain ridges. Here you can easily combine business with pleasure, with numerous monasteries and mineral springs to explore;
- Tsaghkadzor - the country's best-known ski resort, around 50 km from Yerevan in the Marmarik Valley. Be sure to visit the Kecharis Monastery, the Orbeli Brothers House-Museum, ride the Tsaghkadzor cable car and take in the view from the summit of Mount Teghenis.
Good to Know Before You Go
Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality — check the rules for your passport before you book. Either way, be sure to arrange travel medical insurance.
The currency is the Armenian dram. It's the only currency accepted in shops, entertainment venues and shopping centres. Exchange points are found almost everywhere, accepting US dollars and euros. Currency can also be exchanged in shops or with local vendors. The most convenient way to get around is by bus or minibus. Yerevan has a metro line, though it doesn't cover every district.
A few more things worth knowing about Armenia:
- Photographing military installations is not permitted anywhere in Armenia, especially in Nagorno-Karabakh;
- Hotels with beach access offer sun loungers, umbrellas and various water activities for an extra fee;
- Balneology is big here — the country has a huge number of mineral springs, and it would be a shame not to make the most of them;
- The internet and free Wi-Fi are available almost everywhere, even on buses;
- Remember the Armenian saying about Armenia: "The best meat is on the bone, the best land is on the rocks."
