Mykonos: The Island That Never Sleeps

When people think of Greece, they usually picture islands, endless blue sea, beautiful beaches, whitewashed houses and windmills perched on hilltops. This is the image of the country we see in photos and the one most travellers have in mind. To make that dream a reality, head to the island of Mykonos. However, it may not suit every traveller, so here is a brief guide to the resort.

When people think of Greece, most imagine islands, endless blue sea, beautiful beaches, whitewashed houses and windmills perched on hilltops. This is the image of the country we see in photographs, and the one most travellers have in mind. To make that dream a reality, head to Mykonos. However, this destination is not for everyone, so here is a brief guide to the resort.

First and foremost, Mykonos can rightfully be called one of Greece’s most beautiful islands. It is a small island with a population of no more than 10,000 people. This fashionable, bohemian resort is often chosen by celebrities, creative people and anyone who appreciates a high-quality holiday. Compared with other Greek islands, a stay here can be more expensive, though prices are not astronomical. That comes with certain advantages.

First, hotel availability is limited here, and during the high season of July and August, rooms are fully booked. If you are planning a summer holiday, book at least a couple of months in advance. Naturally, this is when the island is busiest. In June, September and early October there are fewer visitors, while the sea is still comfortable for swimming. For some, it is an advantage; for others, a disadvantage that from late autumn through mid-spring there are far fewer people here. This is because the sea becomes too cold for swimming. If swimming is not essential to your trip, this can be an affordable and peaceful time to visit and enjoy the island’s other charms.

The second important thing to know is that this is a party destination. Dancing until dawn, countless bars and beach clubs—you could say that Mykonos never sleeps, and its nightlife rivals Ibiza. Many visitors note that the club scene here feels different from other destinations, with a more sophisticated crowd. Top DJs, excellent service and unforgettable dancing have made this small island famous around the world. So, as you can see, it may not suit every traveller. Of course, visitors of all ages, including families with children, come here too. If noisy parties are not your thing, choose a hotel farther from the coast.

Fans of entertainment and active holidays will also love the water sports. The options are almost endless: diving, water skiing, platform diving, windsurfing, wakeboarding, snorkelling and much more. Even beginners can take lessons at dedicated centres. The beaches also offer facilities and courts for volleyball and tennis, while some locations have play areas for children.

But there is another side to this lively resort: the island itself, its nature and its sights. Sitting with a glass of wine and watching the sunset is one of the most romantic things to do on Mykonos. During the day, you can take excursions and explore its many attractions. For example, visit the island’s capital, Chora, with its medieval houses, postcard-perfect windmills, small chapels and scenic views. We also recommend exploring the Kastro district, the Archaeological Museum, the Mykonos Door, the lighthouse and other interesting places. Naturally, it is best to start with the area where you are staying. If you have not planned any sightseeing in advance, ask the hotel staff for recommendations on nearby attractions and where to book an excursion. Staff usually speak Greek and English, and in rare cases Russian. But in this age of technology, you are sure to find wonderful places to explore nearby.

And we have saved the best for last. Which part of the island should you stay in? Naturally, that depends on the beach you choose. There are countless sandy and pebble beaches here.

For a perfect tan and endless fun, head to Paradise and Super Paradise beaches. Please note that both are clothing-optional beaches, and Super Paradise is especially popular with LGBTQ+ travellers from across Greece and beyond. If you choose this area, wearing a swimsuit is entirely optional. It is also worth adding that some of the best open-air techno parties take place here. This is a decidedly youthful destination. Paranga Beach is no less popular with younger visitors. Located just a five-minute water-taxi ride from Paradise, it is also known among those who enjoy nude sunbathing. Unlike Paradise, however, it has quieter spots surrounded by natural scenery, and the sandy beach itself is very beautiful. Platis Gialos and Psarou are also popular choices. They are easy to reach, with many hotels, cafés and restaurants nearby. These long beaches offer both quiet corners and livelier areas. Ornos, near the island’s capital, is better suited to families: it is less windy and offers plenty of water activities. It is therefore very busy. For romantics, the most beautiful spot on Mykonos is Agios Ioannis Bay.

As you can see, the island has a huge number of beaches, and we have mentioned only a small selection. Some are quiet and peaceful, while others never sleep and keep the music playing until morning. Whether you are looking for seclusion or fun, Mykonos has something for everyone.

And, of course, this is Greece. Expect delicious wines and incredible cuisine, including a wide variety of seafood dishes. You can discover local flavours in both restaurants and small tavernas. Shopping lovers will not find large malls here, but they will enjoy the abundance of goods in small boutiques and local shops.

There are no direct flights to Mykonos from every departure city, so you may need to travel with connections. However, this can be an opportunity to visit Athens along the way. In general, the island can be reached in just two ways: by ferry or by plane. You can travel via Athens, the ports of Piraeus and Rafina, or the islands of Crete, Rhodes and Santorini.

Mykonos is an amazing destination that combines excellent service with a vibrant atmosphere. Even hotels with fewer stars offer high-quality service. The island never sleeps and is always ready to party, yet some of its corners are filled with silence, beauty and calm. It is a wonderful island that seems made for the perfect holiday.
